About this work
Michael Angelo Rooker was one of the earliest British topographical draughtsmen to combine antiquarian interest with the Picturesque (the harmonious arrangement of nature combined with irregular elements). In this meticulously painted view, the imposing abbey building and ruined arch contrast with the more rustic effects of foliage and farm carts, and figures resting from their labours. Rooker’s subdued palette and use of repeating diagonal lines throughout the composition help to harmonise the various components of the scene. (Permanent collection label)
