About this work
The swift, scratchy pen line and vigorously applied wash convey a sense of devotional fervour. This scene of a religious procession shows a Franciscan monk carrying the crucified Christ glorified by angels in the sky. The study may be connected with Cabezalero’s work for the Third Franciscan Order in Madrid, which focused on the contemplation and re-enactment of Christ’s Passion in public processions.
