About this work
The sitter is Cardinal Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle, who served as chief minister to King Philip II in the Netherlands. Granvelle was a keen art collector and owned, amongst other works, Landscape with the Flight to Egypt by Pieter Bruegel, displayed in this room. Unusually, this portrait has been painted on copper rather than wood panel or canvas. Though valued for its vibrant effect on colour, copper was expensive and was rarely used in works of this size.
