About this work
In the early 1880s, Monet focused almost exclusively on painting still-lifes. His letters attest that this lavish arrangement of wild mallows gave him particular trouble. He eventually abandoned the picture, kept it in his studio for forty years and only completed it in the last years of his life. Areas of later reworking are particularly visible in some of the petals and leaves.
