About this work
Montmartre prostitutes were among Lautrec’s favourite models. Here the woman who ran the maison close or brothel in the rue des Moulins is shown leaving the theatre with a companion, a discrete shadow in the background. The lifelike statue reflected in the mirror perhaps refers to the brothel-keeper’s occupation. Its naked body contrasts with her full evening costume; only the shape of her coiffure echoes the sculpture’s voluptuous outline. (Permanent collection label)
