About this work
This print is one of a suite of ten illustrations for Noa Noa, Gauguin’s romanticized account of his first visit to Tahiti in search of an unspoilt native society. Here, he sets the Creation myth in an exotic Tahitian landscape. A dark-skinned Eve, with a face resembling that of his mother, is tempted by a winged lizard. The dual nature of his work is apparent in the delicate balance between subtle suggestive lines, and bold, decorative marks gouged in the wood. (Permanent collection label)
