About this work
Sisley was born in France of English ancestry. He exhibited at the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874 and remained an important member of the group. This painting shows a view of the river Seine at the south-west edge of Paris. Wood is being unloaded from a river barge while a passenger ferry passes nearby. The brushstrokes are remarkably rough and sketchy. They help to give the picture its sense of immediacy.
