About this work
This drawing was probably executed whilst the Maharajah of Bhavnagar, a princely state in the southeast corner of Gujarat, was on a visit to London. It was included in the Pall Mall Budget in 1893, which featured a number of cartoons of distinguished people. It was perhaps Sickert’s love of drama and the stage that allowed him to extract the subtle theatricality of his human subjects. In this case, the exuberance of the Maharajah’s costume, as well as his air of self-importance, is well captured.
