Oskar Kokoschka’s The Dreaming Youths

Part 3: Self-Portrait

This copy of The Dreaming Youths was acquired by Count Antoine Seilern, whose Princes Gate Collection was bequeathed to the Courtauld in 1978. He purchased the book in 1962, writing to the artist on 9 June: ‘I succeeded last week in acquiring a beautiful copy of your glorious book... I am more and more enchanted by it’.

Kokoschka was delighted at the collector’s interest in this early and important work which he described as ‘much loved by me and now almost vanished’. Kokoschka designed a protective box for the book, and also inserted this self-portrait in pen and ink.
