Oskar Kokoschka’s The Dreaming Youths

Part 4: Title-Page

The Dreaming Youths was published originally in 1908 by the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshops), an institution closely connected to the Vienna School of Applied Arts. Kokoschka was helped in his project by two prominent Viennese printers popular with the Werkstätte, Albert Berger (1863-1931) who printed the colour lithographs, and August Chwala (1857-1931) who printed the text and black and white images.

This vignette for the title-page was taken from a pen and ink drawing and was created after the colour lithographs. It introduces many of the book’s recurring motifs, including water, exotic stylised plants and youthful figures gesturing mysteriously.
