Oskar Kokoschka’s The Dreaming Youths

Part 10: Dialogues

In this scene, the youths’ isolation is replaced by a budding intimacy, as couples converse in a leafy garden. The sexual undertone is enhanced by the use of bright orange-red, a colour which had powerful associations for Kokoschka. Besotted with a young Swedish girl, Lilith, he described his delight at her striking red coat whose colour ‘sent me into ecstasies’.
