Writing the Émigré Experience into British Art 1915-1955

Prompted by Ben Uri Gallery and Museum’s Centenary exhibition, Out of Chaos, currently showing at the Inigo Rooms, East Wing, Somerset House, this event comprises three papers followed by a panel discussion and considers how the experience of émigré artists has been written into the history of modern British art. Papers will address the many challenges of the émigré experience including language and cultural differences, internment, limited employment opportunities and the function of Ben Uri as a support mechanism, with a particular focus on women. The 1938 London exhibition Twentieth Century German Art, organised in response to the Third Reich’s campaign against ‘degenerate art’, and the distinctive qualities of the complex, transnational social makeup of migrant communities in areas such as the East End of London, will also be considered. .
