*Meet in Room 4 for introductory talk Tiepolo and Scarlatti in Context *

Taking Tiepolo’s sketch The Power of Eloquence as a basis for this afternoon’s programme, we draw attention to the power of visual and aural works to speak without language, to summon emotion and to evoke place.

Scarlatti and Tiepolo are almost exact contemporaries, both were born in Italy and died in Madrid. The guitar is often associated with Spain, and the second half of the programme highlights it’s ability to convey the atmosphere of Spain and the Spanish–speaking world in works by Ravel, long fascinated by the country, and the Argentine composer Piazzolla. This afternoon’s music is made possible through generous support of the Park Lane Group.

Domenico Scarlatti – Sonata K141 (Toccata)
Mauro Giuliani – Grandi Variazioni Concertante
Pierre Petit – Toccata
Maurice Ravel – Alborada del Gracioso (arr. Goss)
Nikita Koshkin – Concertino
Astor Piazzolla – Tango Suite (Tangos 2 & 3)

Julian Vickers & Daniel Bovey (guitar duo)
