Friends Literary Tour of Carlyle’s House

Thu 18 Mar, 2021

Thomas (1795–1881) and Jane (1801-1866) Carlyle lived on 24 Cheyne Row, Chelsea, from 1834 to 1881. The house is a wonderful example of a Victorian, literary couple’s home who would have received contemporary writers such Dickens, Thackeray and Browning.

It is here that Thomas wrote The French Revolution (1837), The Life and Letters of Oliver Cromwell (1845) and Frederick the Great (1858-65).

William Makepeace Thackeray said: ‘Tom Carlyle lives in perfect dignity in a house in Chelsea with a snuffy Scotch maid to open the door and best company in England ringing at it!’

The Friends will have a guided tour of the house.

Followed by an optional supper.
