Samuel Courtauld Society Visit: The Encounter, National Portrait Gallery

Tue 21 Sep, 2021

This exhibition is a celebration of portrait drawing from the life during a period of extraordinary artistic ingenuity across Europe. Spanning the period from the mid-fifteenth century to the mid-seventeenth century it will examine the moment of encounter between artist and sitter, and the range of drawing tools and media that were used to create portraits as studies, workshop tools and individual works of art.

Drawn from the holdings of a number of the most prestigious British collections, The Encounter will bring together fifty works by artists who worked across Europe, including Leonardo, the Carracci and Bernini in Italy, Dürer in Germany, Rubens and Rembrandt in the Netherlands, and Holbein in England. Curatorial Director, Tarnya Cooper (MA, 1995) will lead a tour of the show.
