Fashion Illustration Now

Dr Rebecca Arnold will be conversation with illustrators Frida Wannerberger and Velwyn Yossy, discussing the state of fashion illustration now. The talk will address questions around contemporary fashion illustration and the creation of identities though visual storytelling. How can we bring fashion illustration back into the minds of consumers of fashion images? What is the value of an image? What does the label fashion illustration mean?

Velwyn Yossy is a multidisciplinary artist and fashion illustrator with a fascination of culture and identity. She creates artworks and experimental projects that blur the boundaries between art, design and fashion. Her work explores alternative ideas of beauty and inner strength, presenting her subjects with depth and emotional complexity. Many of her projects are concept-driven, characterized by playful experimentation as well as exaggeration of forms and lines both in traditional and digital medium.

Born in South Sumatra, Indonesia and spent her early years in Jakarta, she moved to Los Angeles and more recently, to London. After graduating from Art Center College of Design (B.S Honors) in 2012, she has collaborated with Instagram in a cover feature, CNN Style, SHOWstudio, Gucci, and her works have been featured in, amongst others, The Daily Telegraph, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, AnOther Loves, DASH, LOVE magazine and Tumblr radar.

She is currently exploring the possibilities of paint, in a project entitled “Dolls and Identity”, tapping into the construction of cross-cultural identity, utilizing dolls as subject matter. Some of the explorations include childhood-adulthood escapism, trauma & anxieties, object sentimentality, and subversive cuteness.

Frida Wannerberger is an illustrator with a fascination for beautiful things, the world and the un-everydaily. There is a subtle narrative to her work, expressing an intense love for clothes. An analytical relationship with what we wear along with an attraction to details, ultimately led her onto the path of illustration for fashion. Trained at Central Saint Martins, Frida graduated 2013 with a BA in Graphic Design and Illustration.

She has worked with 2×4/Prada, A Magazine Curated By, Because Magazine, Fanpages, Gucci, Harper’s Bazaar, Hunger Magazine, London Fashion Week The Daily, Lula Magazine, Nordstrom, Pringle of Scotland, SHOWstudio, The Wallace Collection.
