The end of the 20th century fostered an extensive debate known as the linguistic turn controversy, or the "innocent eye debate", and generally referred to as the structuralism-poststructuralism debate in the philosophy of art.

Experience of the mysterious. Art provides a way to experience one's self in relation to the universe. This experience may often come unmotivated, as one appreciates art, music or poetry.

Realistic, naturalistic art had dissembled the medium, using art to conceal art; modernism used art to call attention to art.

Another important innovation came in the 15th century in Europe, when printmaking began with small woodcuts, mostly religious, that were often very small and hand-colored.

Indeed, the reverse is often true, that the revision of what is popularly conceived of as being aesthetically appealing allows for a re-invigoration of aesthetic sensibility, and a new appreciation for the standards of art itself.

Is there any difference between art and architecture? I'm wondering this after writing a feature that was as much about architecture as "art" – and in envy of architectural critics off to Rome to see Zaha Hadid's latest wonder, the Maxxi.

What will future cultural historians say about the arts in our time? They will almost certainly see architecture as the backbone of visual culture in the early 2000s.

"The division of the museum into variously-designed bodies convincingly integrates the complex into its small-scale urban environment and is orientated towards the incline of the former monastery garden, whose gently curving terraces rise above the underground sections of the building.

Whether you traveled the northern branch east from Rome, or the southern one from Arabia, you ended up doing business here. And because of its gateway position, it was where Buddhism spilled out of India and Central Asia into China, leaving a residue of spectacular art.

The Whitney Museum’s board of trustees has elected Laurie M. Tisch and Neil G. Bluhm as co-chairs and Richard M. DeMartini as president. All three will begin their new positions this week on July 1. Tisch and Bluhm will succeed Brooke Garber Neidich and Robert J. Hurst, and former board president DeMartini will succeed Bluhm.

Art is anything that people add to their 'output' which is
not functionally necessary and is other than the default
properties of that output.

Art and science are usually treated diagonally opposite to
each other. While science means some phenomenon
resulting in truth, which is universal and objective in
nature.

"Eames in Name and in Spirit" (by Susan Freudenheim, July 16) was a well-written and informative article about Charles and Ray Eames and their heirs. However, I beg to differ regarding your placing it under the heading "art." The story is about design and designers. Giving it the heading of "art" further confuses those who can't tell the difference between design and art, and misleads the young who are trying to decide on or developing a career.

Re "Are we losing the tech race?," Opinion, April 20 Michael Teitelbaum presents common-sense advice about majoring in science. He echoes what proponents of the liberal arts have been saying for years: that it is not enough to specialize in one area of expertise, and that science students must gain broad intellectual skills developed through the humanities, arts and social sciences
