The Rock Circus Statues

Part 2: Diana Ross, Mick Jagger and Elton John

Though Butler was primarily known for his work in bronze, particularly of military and historical subjects, he had a good deal of experience in casting resin and fibreglass from earlier in his career. The 10 artists chosen by the team at Tussauds were a fair cross-section of what was considered ‘Rock Aristocracy’ in the late 80s: Buddy Holly, Diana Ross (in Supremes mode), Mick Jagger (in 1981 ‘Tattoo You’-era garb), Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie (as Ziggy Stardust), Elton John, Gary Glitter, Michael Jackson (sporting his 1984’s kitsch Prussian military look), Annie Lennox (circa ‘83) and Madonna (from her 1985 ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’ period). The notable absence of Elvis and The Beatles can be put down to the notorious degree of image control exercised by these artists and their estates.
